About the Competition

Wood WORKS! BC / Canadian Wood Council annually host the Western Canadian Wood Design Competition on the UBC Campus in Vancouver BC. This year’s event is scheduled for March 27, 2010 at the Whit-Matthews Field.

The purpose of the competition is to challenge registered college/university students to create an original design for a lightweight siege engine which, when built, is capable of hitting a target at 20, 30 and 45 meters using a 2 lb. projectile. Teams, consisting of students and one faculty member, submit a report prior to the competition about their design. On the morning of the competition they are required to give a 10 minute presentation to the judges and others teams, after their weigh-in and set-up.

Later the trials will take place and these have been newly revised to three categories: Qualifying Trials, Performance Trials and Longest Distance Trials.

As a result of increased emphasis on the design process of the competition, prize monies will also be disbursed into the three new categories, rather than just three cash prizes overall. We invite spectators to join us on competition day for this unique and interesting event. The morning session is primarily focused on the team set-up and presentations and the afternoon will concentrate on the trial sessions.
